The grown-ups' centrepiece, and the one thing on the table that requires no cooking at all. Keep the palette to black, deep purple and cream and it reads as Halloween without a single plastic spider.

Ingredients

  • 1 wheel brie
  • 1 wedge blue cheese
  • 1 wedge aged white cheddar
  • 4 oz salami, thinly sliced
  • 3 oz prosciutto or bresaola
  • 1 bunch black grapes
  • Fresh figs, halved
  • Blackberries
  • Black or charcoal crackers
  • Smoked almonds
  • Blackberry jam or fig preserves

Instructions

  1. Set the cheeses down first, spaced apart across the board — they anchor everything else.
  2. Roll salami slices into roses by folding each over the rim of a small glass, then tipping them out in clusters.
  3. Drape the prosciutto in loose ribbons rather than flat slices.
  4. Fill the gaps with black grapes, figs, and blackberries so no bare wood shows.
  5. Tuck crackers along one edge, set out small bowls of nuts and jam, and let the cheese come to room temperature 30 minutes before serving.

Why it works & making it ahead

Place the cheeses first and build around them — they anchor the whole board. Salami roses take seconds: fold each slice over the rim of a small glass, pack it, then tip it out. Let the cheese sit out thirty minutes before serving, and fill every gap so no bare wood shows.

Keep the palette dark — black, deep purple, cream. That alone makes it read as Halloween.
