Twenty-five minutes of work that children remember for years: hot dogs wrapped loosely in strips of pastry like bandages, with two mustard eyes peering out of the gap.
Ingredients
- 8 hot dogs or good frankfurters
- 1 sheet puff pastry or 1 tube crescent dough
- 1 egg, beaten, for the wash
- Mustard, for eyes
- Ketchup, for dipping
Instructions
- Heat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet.
- Cut the pastry into long strips about 1/4 inch wide.
- Wrap each hot dog loosely in strips, crossing and overlapping like bandages, leaving a gap near one end for the face.
- Brush with egg wash and set on the sheet, seam side down.
- Bake 15–18 minutes until deep golden and puffed.
- Dot two small eyes of mustard in the face gap and serve hot with ketchup.
Why it works & making it ahead
Wrap loosely and leave real gaps — tight bandages puff into a solid sleeve and lose the effect. Leave one end bare for the face. You can wrap them in the morning, keep them covered in the fridge, and bake as guests arrive.
